SDG #302 Launch CRP123X and a Ford Focus Ecoboost with P0137 and P0141 O2 Sensor Codes

The Launch CRP123X sits at the budget end of the tablet-style scan tool market, and this review puts it straight to work on a real fault rather than just walking through menus. The hardware is deliberately basic: a five inch touchscreen on Android 7, a rubberised rugged shell, a hardwired D-sub to OBD2 lead that powers the unit from the vehicle, and an internal battery so a diagnostic session can be carried away from the car. Charging is via a 5.5mm barrel jack rather than USB-C, and there is no fold-out stand or steering wheel hook.

Functionally the CRP123X is limited to four modules: engine, ABS, SRS and automatic transmission, with three service resets (oil, steering angle, throttle relearn). Within that scope it does full code reading, freeze frame and snapshot data, live data streams and graphing, plus exportable health reports and free lifetime updates with no subscription.

The test vehicle, a 2017 Ford Focus with the 1.0 three cylinder EcoBoost, threw P0141 and P0137 on the post-cat oxygen sensor. Live data made the diagnosis straightforward: the PCM was commanding heater current but reading none, pointing at an open circuit heater rather than a catalyst problem, which was confirmed with a resistance check at the connector. Slightly positive fuel trims prompted a smoke test, revealing a split rocker cover near the camshaft sensor, temporarily sealed with high temperature silicone. After fitting a new sensor the codes cleared and stayed clear.

For a DIY owner who mainly wants powertrain and ABS coverage with usable live data, the module restrictions are the main compromise, and at this price they are easy to accept.
