SDG #204 Cityfibre / Vodafone Gigafast 900 Mbit/s FTTH (FTTP) Rollout - First Impressions

Full fibre is finally reaching UK streets outside the major incumbent networks, and this video documents what actually happens when a CityFibre build passes a house and Vodafone’s Gigafast 900Mbit/s package is ordered. Rather than a marketing overview, it is a practical walkthrough of the physical installation and the hardware that comes with it: the fibre entry point and wall box, the ONT that terminates the optical line, and the supplied router that handles routing, Wi-Fi and the LAN side.

The interesting engineering detail is where the bottleneck moves once the access network stops being the limiting factor. At symmetric gigabit rates, the router’s WAN throughput, the quality of the Ethernet cabling, the client network adapter and even the test server all become part of the measurement. That is why speed test results on a connection like this vary so much between wired and wireless clients, and why single stream tests often understate what the line can do. Latency and jitter are arguably the bigger day to day upgrade over VDSL or cable, particularly for remote work, video calls and gaming.

For anyone considering an alternative network FTTP offer, the useful conclusions concern expectations rather than raw figures: check whether the package is genuinely symmetric, understand what the supplied ONT and router can and cannot do (bridge mode, static IP options, port availability), and be prepared to upgrade the internal network to see the full headline speed on more than one machine. First impressions are positive, with the caveat that the installation experience and in home networking often need more attention than the connection itself.
