A common objection to high wattage soldering stations is that all that power has to go somewhere, and that somewhere is your components. This short demonstration puts that idea to the test on the Geeboon HA310, a 400W station, by deliberately stacking the deck against it: a small through hole kit assembled with a deliberately oversized soldering tip, the exact combination people claim will cook pads and lift traces.
The result is unremarkable in the best possible way. Pads are pre-tinned, resistors go in, legs get soldered, headers and a socket are fitted, and the finished board powers up and works. Nothing scorches, nothing delaminates, nothing dies.
The reason matters more than the demo. Wattage on a closed loop station is a ceiling, not a setting. The cartridge is temperature controlled, so the station only supplies whatever power is needed to hold the tip at the set temperature under load. High wattage buys you fast heat up and, more importantly, thermal recovery when you hit a ground plane or a thick pad; it does not push extra heat into a joint that has already reached temperature. Where damage actually comes from is excessive tip temperature, dwell time, mechanical force, and poor thermal contact, none of which are fixed by buying a weaker station.
For buyers, the practical takeaway is that a 400W station is not a liability for small work, especially since the HA310 also runs smaller hand pieces such as C210 for fine pitch and delicate boards. One station covering both extremes is a reasonable argument for the extra power rather than against it.
