SDG #052 How to look after your soldering iron tip - Soldering Techniques #01

Soldering tips are consumable in theory but disposable only through neglect in practice, and this first entry in the Soldering Techniques series sets out why. The core message is that a modern plated tip is a layered structure: a copper core for thermal conductivity, an iron plating that resists solder erosion, and protective coatings on the shank. Every habit that strips or breaches that plating shortens tip life dramatically, which is why aggressive abrasives, files and sandpaper are treated as a last resort rather than routine cleaning.

The guidance is grounded in the chemistry of oxidation. A bare, hot tip oxidises quickly, and an oxidised surface will not wet with solder, so it stops transferring heat efficiently and the user compensates by cranking up the temperature, which accelerates the damage further. The fix is keeping a solder film on the working face at all times: tin before use, tin before parking the iron in the stand, and tin again before switching off. Excess temperature is identified as one of the biggest silent killers of tips, alongside prolonged idling at full heat and leaving flux residues baked onto the surface.

Cleaning method matters too. Brass wool is favoured over wet sponges because it removes oxide and old solder without the thermal shock and mechanical stress that repeated wet wiping introduces. Tip activator or tinner is presented as the recovery route for a tip that has already dewetted, rather than reaching for abrasives.

For anyone buying a station with expensive cartridge tips, this is essentially a cost of ownership video: the tips themselves are frequently a significant fraction of the iron’s price, and disciplined technique is what keeps that spend infrequent.
