SDG #300 Kingbolen S500 Smart Diagnostic Tool
The Kingbolen S500 sits at the entry point of a three-model family (S500, S600, S800) that share the same physical hardware but differ only in unlocked software features. At roughly 150 pounds delivered, the S500 gives you manufacturer-level access to four control modules: engine (PCM), ABS, the restraint/airbag module and the transmission control unit, plus four reset routines (oil, brake bleed, steering angle sensor and throttle relearn).
Testing on a manual Ford Mondeo shows what that actually buys you. Module-specific fault code reading and clearing works, generic OBD2 mode is available as a fallback for extra PIDs, and live data streams can be graphed with up to four parameters plotted at once. The refresh rate is around one sample per second, which is fine for coolant temperature, MAF readings or throttle position, but far too slow for chasing an O2 sensor’s rich/lean switching; that still needs a scope. The ABS live data proved genuinely handy, showing brake line pressure modulating in real time along with switch states and hill launch assist status, and the airbag module reports squib resistances and voltages, useful after a seat or airbag swap.
Practical strengths: a crisp, responsive touchscreen on a locked-down Android base, an internal battery so a session survives cranking or unplugging, free lifetime updates with no account or subscription, plus battery voltage logging via a tap on the header reading. Downsides are no carry case, no steering wheel hook, no bi-directional controls, and a 1.5 m OBD cable that keeps you in the cabin.
The real frustration is the absence of any upgrade path. During scanning the tool clearly detects modules it then refuses to open, so the capability is there in hardware but artificially withheld. Buyers should pick the right tier at purchase rather than expecting to license extra functions later.
