SDG #153 Why does the Quick 861 cause lights to flicker??
The Quick 861DW is one of the most recommended hot air rework stations for hobby and repair benches, but plenty of owners notice something odd the moment they power it up: the room lights dip or flicker in time with the station’s heating cycle. This video digs into the electrical reason behind that behaviour rather than dismissing it as a fault.
The core issue is how the station’s heater is driven. A high wattage heating element being switched on and off rapidly draws large, pulsed currents from the mains rather than a smooth continuous load. Those current pulses cause voltage sag across the impedance of your household wiring, and anything sharing that circuit, especially LED and CFL lamps with cheap drivers, visibly responds to the sag. Longer extension leads, thin cable runs and heavily loaded ring mains all make the effect worse, which explains why some users see dramatic flicker and others barely notice it.
For a buyer, the practical takeaways matter more than the theory. Flicker on its own is not evidence of a broken unit or a counterfeit, and it does not mean the station is unsafe. It is worth checking whether your unit is a genuine Quick or one of the many clones sold under the same model numbers, since build quality and mains filtering vary. If the flicker is annoying, moving the station to a different circuit from your lighting, using shorter and heavier gauge mains cable, or running sensitive lamps on a separate supply all help. Anyone working in a shared space or filming under lights will want to plan the bench layout with this in mind before blaming the lamps.
