SDG #012 5W LED Golf Ball Light Bulb

This episode begins a running series on low cost, randomly chosen items bought from eBay, starting with a 5 W LED golf ball lamp. Golf ball bulbs are the small round lamps commonly used in pendant fittings, bedside lamps and wall lights, and they are one of the categories where cheap imported LED replacements have flooded the market. The question is always the same: whether an unbranded bulb sold for very little delivers the light output it claims, and whether it lasts.

Rather than cutting the lamp open, this one stays intact because it is needed in service, and the moulded plastic housing is sealed well enough that a teardown would destroy it. That constraint shifts the focus to what a buyer can judge before purchase: the physical build quality, the finish of the diffuser and base, the plausibility of the wattage and equivalent brightness claims printed on the packaging, and how the light looks in a real fitting rather than on a specification sheet.

For anyone buying LED retrofits, the conclusion is that inexpensive golf ball lamps can be perfectly serviceable for low use fittings, but claimed lumen figures and colour temperatures on unbranded listings deserve scepticism. Driver quality is the usual weak point in these lamps, and it is hidden inside a sealed body, so failure tends to come from the electronics rather than the LEDs. Judging a cheap bulb on light quality and construction is often the most practical assessment available.
