SDG #194 Wireless 3D Printing with the Creality WiFi Box. Or not.

The Creality WiFi Box promises to turn any USB-serial 3D printer into a wireless one, with slicing handled in the cloud or on your phone and files pushed over WiFi instead of shuttled around on an SD card. On paper that is an appealing upgrade for anyone whose printer lives in a garage, loft or spare room. In practice, this review shows why the low price should set expectations accordingly.

Testing covers the whole ownership experience rather than just the spec sheet: physical connection to the printer’s USB port, pairing the box to a home network, getting the companion app talking to it, and then actually sending a model through to print. The problems surface once printing starts. Slicing options are limited compared with a desktop slicer, control over the resulting G-code is restricted, and the printing behaviour itself does not inspire confidence in a device you are meant to leave unattended. Anyone used to running Octoprint on a Raspberry Pi will notice how much functionality is missing, particularly around monitoring and recovery when things go wrong.

The teardown is the most interesting part for the technically minded, exposing the modest hardware and firmware approach behind the plastic shell and explaining why performance is what it is. Two printers, an Ender 3 V2 and a Geeetech A20M, provide context on compatibility.

The verdict is a cautious one. If you want convenience above all and can tolerate limited control, it is inexpensive. If you care about print reliability and detailed slicer settings, a Raspberry Pi based solution or simply walking an SD card to the machine remains the better answer.
