The black Eakins simul-focal stereo microscope is one of the most common budget trinocular heads sold for electronics rework, and this review looks at whether the simul-focal design justifies the extra outlay over a plain trinocular body. The key distinction is the beam splitter: with a simul-focal head you can keep both eyepieces and the camera port live at the same time, so you are not forced to choose between looking through the optics and watching a monitor. For anyone recording repair footage or working from a screen while still needing binocular depth perception for fine soldering, that is the single feature worth paying for.
Coverage includes the 3.5x to 90x zoom range and how that magnification is actually achieved, since the headline figure depends on eyepiece choice and the addition of Barlow lenses. A 0.5x Barlow is more or less essential in practice: it drops the bottom end of the magnification range and, more importantly, buys back working distance so there is room for an iron, tweezers and hot air under the objective. Higher magnification numbers on these listings are largely marketing; the useful working range for PCB level work sits at the low end.
Also assessed are the mechanical aspects that determine day to day usability: focus block feel, zoom detents, eyepiece dioptre adjustment, and how the head mounts to a stand. Stand choice matters as much as the optics, with boom arm setups offering far more freedom over a large board than a pillar stand.
