Standalone thermal cameras have dropped far enough in price that the Hti HT-02 now sits under the $200 mark, and this review looks at whether that translates into a genuinely useful tool for electronics work or just a novelty. The HT-02 is a pistol-grip handheld unit with a fixed display, internal storage for captured images and a rechargeable battery, so unlike phone-dock thermal accessories it works entirely on its own without an app or a compatible handset.
The comparison point here is a Flir One Gen 3, which gives a fair sense of where the HT-02’s native sensor resolution and interpolation sit relative to a well known clip-on alternative. That distinction matters: a lot of budget cameras advertise a large output image while the underlying microbolometer array is much coarser, and on small SMD parts the difference between usable thermal detail and a soft blur is exactly where cheap units get exposed.
Testing is done on bare and populated boards, which is the toughest realistic use case for a low resolution imager. Fine-pitch packages, small passives and tightly spaced regulators all sit close enough together that thermal bleed and limited spot size can make it hard to tell which component is actually running hot. The review also covers the practical side of ownership: menu behaviour and palette options on power-up, how the saved image files look once transferred off the camera, and measured current consumption, which gives a real indication of runtime rather than relying on the manufacturer’s claim.
For hobbyists chasing hotspots, shorted rails or overheating regulators, the verdict comes down to whether the resolution is enough for board-level troubleshooting at this price.
