For a hobbyist or small developer, the economics are the interesting part. Once you factor in the cost of a stencil, solder paste, a hot plate or hot air station, and the hours spent placing 0402 parts under a microscope, paying for machine placement on a small batch starts to look reasonable, particularly for fine pitch QFN and BGA-adjacent packages where hand work has a high failure rate. The compromise is flexibility: you trade the ability to substitute whatever is in your parts drawer for consistent solder joints and repeatability.
