SDG #03 Metcal MX-DS1 Desoldering Gun

The Metcal MX-DS1 is the compressed air desoldering handpiece for the MX-5200 series, and this session continues from the MX-5251 unboxing: the compressor has arrived, so the gun can finally be run. That detail matters more than most buyers expect. Unlike self contained desoldering guns with a built in diaphragm pump, the MX-DS1 relies on an external air supply to generate its vacuum, which means the true cost of ownership includes a compressor, hose, regulation and a quiet place to put it. A so called silent compressor is close to mandatory if the bench is in a room where conversation is expected.

The tests show the practical difference between a hobby desoldering pump and a professional cartridge based system. Metcal’s inductive heating places the thermal energy at the tip and holds temperature as the joint draws heat away, so through hole joints on ground planes and multilayer boards come free without the long dwell times that lift pads and damage laminate. Technique still dominates results: the correct tip inner diameter for the lead, adding a little fresh solder to the joint, keeping the tip moving in the hole, and triggering vacuum at the right moment.

Maintenance is the other honest observation. Any vacuum desoldering tool depends on how diligently the tip is cleared, the filter changed and the solder collection chamber emptied, and the MX-DS1 is no exception. For anyone reworking older through hole equipment, connectors, or large electrolytics in volume, this is the kind of tool that pays back in saved boards rather than saved minutes.
