Surplus telecom gear is one of the cheapest routes to a genuinely accurate bench standard, and the Symmetricom GPS disciplined oscillator covered here is a classic example. These modules were built to hold cell site timing to sub-microsecond accuracy, which means the oven controlled crystal oscillator inside is far better than anything found in a typical bench meter or function generator, and once locked to GPS its long term stability is effectively set by the satellite constellation rather than by the crystal’s ageing curve.
Part one is all about establishing what the hardware actually is before committing to a modification. The cover comes off for a walk around the PCB, identifying the oscillator, the GPS receiver section, the control and monitoring circuitry and the connectors that will matter later: antenna input, 10MHz output and the serial port used to interrogate lock status. Understanding the supply requirements is the other critical step, because many of these pulls expect telecom style DC rails rather than a friendly bench voltage, and getting that wrong is an expensive mistake on a unit bought untested.
The power-up test is the real verdict. Confirming that the unit boots, acquires satellites, disciplines the oscillator and produces a clean output tells you whether a second hand module is worth building a project around. For anyone shopping for a lab reference, the takeaway is that a used GPSDO can outperform a new low cost reference module for similar money, provided you are prepared to sort out mounting, a suitable antenna with sky view, and a power supply that suits the board rather than the other way around.
