For anyone shopping for an inexpensive 4.5 digit meter, the takeaway is that resolution on the spec sheet says nothing about the robustness of the supply behind it. Budget bench instruments frequently run their regulators with almost no margin, which is fine on the test bench and marginal in a warm workshop or on a slightly low mains voltage. The good news is that these faults are repairable with basic tools, and the repair typically improves reliability well beyond the original design. It is a useful reminder to check the boring power section first before suspecting the measurement circuitry.
