SDG #363 eBay NAD Direct Digital Amplifier D 7050 Repair - Lots of issues
This is a full teardown and multi fault repair of a NAD D 7050 Direct Digital Amplifier bought as a parts or not working unit on eBay. The advertised fault was a completely dead front panel, no OLED, no working rotary encoders and no infrared remote response, but the actual list of problems turned out to be considerably longer.
The first surprise is mechanical: a rattle inside the chassis traced to fragments of the switch mode supply’s main transformer bobbin, which had broken loose in transit and lifted the transformer off the board. Rather than chase an unobtainable custom part, the transformer is checked for cracked ferrite, measured on an LCR meter, resoldered and epoxied down. A capacitor audit then finds several genuinely dead parts, including a bulged 1000uF standby output cap reading leaky, and a 10uF bias cap for the TinySwitch controller measuring 3.3uF with very high ESR.
The front panel diagnosis is the interesting part. The OLED’s boost converter had failed catastrophically, taking out the inductor, a diode and the PCB traces, and the resulting overcurrent had opened a ferrite bead on the main board’s 5V feed, which is why the encoders were also dead. A UART debug header on the PIC microcontroller proves the MCU was alive the whole time. There is also a useful design observation: network standby keeps the entire class D amplifier powered, drawing around 20W.
The repair ends functional but incomplete, since the original SSD1355 OLED is obsolete and an SSD1351 substitute needs firmware level translation, deferred to a follow up.
