SDG #356 Repair of an Amazon Return Shinco Dehumidifier SDL5-10D
A Shinco SDL5-10D heat pump dehumidifier, sold as a customer return with a vague “electrical fault” description, becomes a useful lesson in how to triage cheap appliance electronics. Powering it up produces a beep and a garbled seven segment display with dead buttons, which immediately narrows the suspect list to the front panel rather than the refrigeration circuit. That distinction matters if you are shopping for broken units yourself: listings that mention lost refrigerant are far riskier, though this model uses R290 (propane), which is not restricted the same way as F gas refrigerants in the UK.
Stripping the case reveals a physically ruptured CMS1628 display driver, a multiplexing chip that handles both LED drive and key scanning. Rather than assuming the chip was simply poor quality, the power supply board is checked properly: switch on and switch off transients are captured on a scope through an isolation setup, since the supply turns out to be a non isolated buck rather than a flyback, and the bulk capacitors are measured for ESR and capacitance in circuit. Everything checks out, so the failed IC is removed by clipping legs individually to avoid delaminating the cheap non FR4 board.
The replacement chip alone does not fix it. Continuity checks from the programming header through the data, clock and strobe lines find a 100 ohm series resistor blown open with a visible hole, suggesting a genuine surge rather than a lone defective part. With both parts replaced the unit runs, cycles the compressor and starts collecting water. The odd gurgling noise from the refrigerant lines appears to be normal for the model based on owner reviews.
