SDG #364 VDIAG V200 Pro Automotive Circuit Probe and Wire Tracer

The VDIAG V200 Pro is an automotive circuit probe and wire finder kit that runs from the vehicle’s 12 V supply rather than batteries, connecting to the battery terminals or the accessory socket, with an extension lead. The probe reads the voltage at its tip, shows green at ground and red above about 0.7 V, and can inject either battery voltage or ground through the tip from a rocker switch on the handle. Further modes cover an AC waveform display, resistance and diode testing, and a tone generator used with the separate radio receiver to trace wiring. LEDs around the tip light the work area.

Inside, an NXP LPC series ARM microcontroller drives the display and generates the tone. The power injection path has no switching device other than the rocker itself, so the thin internal wiring sets the limit: around 5 A for any sustained period, with brief fan starts below 10 A at most.

Resistance readings are coarse but usable, and the diode test reports an impedance rather than a forward voltage. The waveform mode displayed a 10 kHz sine with some amplitude error, aliased from around 30 kHz, handled square waves to about 50 kHz, and has no duty cycle readout, which matters for PWM sensor outputs. The tone tracer located a taped over break in a test wire by the change in amplitude along its length, with the caution that the signal is injected onto the conductor and should be kept away from energised or sensitive circuits. A programmable 5 V or 3.3 V output would be a useful addition, but at this price the V200 Pro is a handy tool for DIY and entry level professional use.
