SDG #021 Samsung 46" TV Repair
A no-power Samsung 46 inch LCD set is one of the most common faults on the bench, and this repair walks through the fastest diagnostic path: get the back off, get to the power supply board, and check the electrolytics on the standby rail before reaching for a scope.
The key tool here is the Peak Electronics ESR70, an in-circuit ESR meter that removes most of the guesswork from capacitor testing. Visual inspection alone is unreliable because a capacitor can measure high ESR with no bulging or venting at all, and conversely a slightly domed can may still be within tolerance. Being able to probe a cap while it is still soldered in place, without discharging or lifting legs, is what turns a multi hour teardown into a ten minute job. That in-circuit capability is the main reason to own a dedicated ESR meter rather than relying on the capacitance range of a general purpose multimeter, which will happily report a nominal value on a capacitor that has lost its low impedance behaviour.
Rework is handled with a Metcal MX-5200 and no-clean desoldering braid, and the replacement is a Panasonic FM series low ESR part. Choosing a good quality low impedance series with a suitable temperature rating matters in a switching supply that runs warm around the clock in standby, since the original failure is usually a combination of ripple current stress and heat.
Worth noting from the analysis: although the failed capacitor sits on the standby supply, that same rail appears to carry the controller load once the set is fully powered, with additional rails coming from the second supply section. That explains why a single degraded capacitor can take the whole television down rather than just breaking standby.
