A broken Fosi Audio N3 portable Bluetooth headphone amplifier bought as a spares-or-repair gamble turns out to be one of the more satisfying kinds of fault: mechanical damage rather than a dead silicon. The unit powers up, pairs over Bluetooth and shows a full battery, but a spectrum analyser view of the output confirms only one channel is producing audio, and the visibly tilted 3.5mm socket points straight at the culprit.
Opening the case reveals a headphone jack partially torn off the board with a pad lifted with it, almost certainly the result of a drop while headphones were plugged in. Also visible are unevenly lit status LEDs, one of which is discoloured and clearly badly reworked at the factory, plus a pair of cut tracks with a resistor bodged across them, a reminder that even inexpensive commercial audio gear can leave the line with hand-modified boards.
The repair walkthrough is genuinely instructive. Low melt alloy is used to lift the plastic-bodied jack without melting it, then that alloy is scrubbed out to avoid brittle joints later. Careful microscope inspection of the pads and vias shows which terminals are actually connected, which explains why one pad let go so easily and dictates the wire mod route around the board edge rather than a risky joint hidden under the connector. UV cure adhesive adds mechanical strength so the socket does not tear off again.
The payoff: both channels restored, working volume, bass boost and gain switches, and enough drive for 600 ohm headphones with gain enabled. Noise floor and dynamic range are clearly behind a dedicated desktop DAC, and clarity is a step down, but for the total outlay it is a very usable amplifier.
