SDG #341 ATETOOL AD680D 80W 230V Soldering Iron

The ATETOOL AE680D (also listed as AD680D) is an unusual entry in the budget cartridge iron market because the tips run directly on 230V mains rather than through a low voltage transformer. That design choice sidesteps the biggest weakness of cheap transformer stations, which is a supply that cannot actually deliver the rated wattage. Here the 80W figure is set purely by the roughly 130 ohm cold resistance of the cartridge element, and the wall meter confirmed a peak draw near 175W during warm up.

The more interesting discovery comes from the multimeter and the teardown. The cartridge has only two live terminals plus an earthed shell, and there is no thermocouple anywhere in the assembly. Temperature regulation is instead inferred from the changing resistance of the heater itself, measured during the off portion of the triac’s switching cycle. That is a clever bit of engineering for the price, and calibration against a tip thermometer showed only about 9 degrees of error, easily trimmed out with the compensation setting.

Where the approach shows its limits is thermal recovery. On gold plated pads the iron soldered cleanly with barely a blip on the power graph, but the four layer, via stitched high demand board caused noticeable dragging, with average draw sitting around 45W rather than pushing toward its ceiling. JBC and Metcal style recovery is not on offer here.

Features are generous for roughly 37 GBP: an OLED interface with adjustable standby and sleep, a vibration switch for motion detection, hand piece buttons, and two point calibration. The main compromises are the glued together hand piece, a grub screw that clamps directly onto the cartridge neck, no hot swapping, and a very limited tip range of five cartridges. A sensible first cartridge iron for hobby work, not a rework station.
