SDG #372 Solder Not Melting? Here’s Why (and How to Fix Your Iron Tip)
Poor soldering usually gets blamed on temperature or cheap solder wire, but this test makes the real culprit obvious: a dull, oxidized tip cannot form a thermal bridge to the joint, so solder just balls up and rolls off. The demonstration back to back with a properly tinned cartridge on a dedicated soldering test PCB is a useful reference point for anyone convinced their iron is underpowered.
Six recovery methods are tried on heavily oxidized JBC and Metcal cartridges. A damp sponge gives a marginal improvement thanks to light abrasion, and brass wool barely moves the needle on a badly gone tip. JBC’s Inox wool is the standout, restoring one cartridge to a bright, fully wetting surface that solders like new. Plain rosin flux only helps where a little shiny plating survives, and the Thermaltronics style tip tinner compound produces a few isolated shiny patches at best, which matters because these pastes are acidic and can eat the thin iron plating. The sal ammoniac block, despite its reputation, also fails to restore a black tip.
The honest conclusion is that a severely oxidized cartridge is largely a lost cause; chemicals will not bring it back, and sanding risks cutting through plating to the copper core. The strongest evidence for maintenance over rescue is a Metcal cartridge from 2012 that has done tens of thousands of joints on nothing but a sponge and brass wool. A worthwhile buying warning too: much cheap “brass” wool is copper coloured steel wool that will strip plating, so stick to branded wool from a known soldering equipment maker.
