SDG #343 Handskit T12-X2 Desoldering Tweezers System

The Handskit T12-X2 is a familiar budget T12 station given a twist: alongside the usual T12 handpiece it ships with a pair of desoldering tweezers built from two T12 cartridges, and the controller can drive both heaters together in tweezer mode. On paper that is an appealing way to get into tweezer desoldering for a fraction of the cost of a Metcal or JBC setup.

The teardown is more reassuring than expected. The bundled 24V supply is rated at 190W, far beyond what the iron needs, is mechanically well anchored and soldered straight to the IEC inlet, and only the unbranded electrolytics look like a long-term weak point. The front panel board uses an Artery AT32 ARM microcontroller with two MOSFETs so each tweezer heater gets its own switch, though thermocouple sensing comes from a single cartridge, so there is no independent per-tip regulation. Earthing remains the same old complaint: the chassis is only indirectly grounded through a thin wire and the front panel connector, which would not survive a genuine mains fault and deserves rewiring with proper gauge cable and a ring terminal.

The real problem is calibration. With the display set to 345C the tip measured around 415C, and further tests showed the whole slope is wrong rather than a fixed offset. The menu offers a tip offset but no multi-point calibration, and no hidden service mode surfaced. Desoldering performance itself is fine on 0805 parts and small two-terminal components, with peaks over 150W, but the fixed tip geometry, lack of alignment adjustment and flimsy plastic tweezers limit access around connectors and multi-pin packages. Worth watching for anyone weighing tweezers against simply using two irons.
