Desoldering tweezers sit in an awkward spot in most workshops: they are expensive, they only do one job, and hot air can often substitute. This comparison puts two of the most credible options side by side, the JBC AM120 handpiece and the Metcal MX-PTZ, to work out whether either justifies the outlay for a hobbyist or small repair shop.

The two take noticeably different approaches. The Metcal cartridges rely on the company’s Curie-point self-regulating technology, so tip temperature is fixed by the cartridge you fit rather than set on the station, which keeps things simple but ties you to buying the right cartridge for the job. Tip alignment, jaw pressure and how well the pair of tips actually meet matter more than raw wattage here, and that is where the practical differences show up when gripping small two-terminal parts.

The hands-on portion covers removing passives, SOT and multi-lead packages, and shows how tweezers can lift a part cleanly without blasting neighbouring components or lightweight parts across the board, which is the main argument for owning a set at all. Ergonomics also get attention: weight, cable stiffness and how easily you can pinch a component without rolling it are the things you notice after an hour of rework.

Buyers should treat this as a specialist addition rather than a hot air replacement. If you already run one of these station ecosystems, adding the matching tweezer handpiece is the cheaper path than switching brands.
