The XTOOL IP616 sits in the middle ground between cheap code readers and professional scan tools, and this hands on test on a BMW shows where it stands. At roughly 330 pounds it offers full system access rather than only engine codes, so the engine management unit, transmission, airbag, alarm and tyre pressure modules can all be interrogated for stored faults and, more usefully, live data.

The live data implementation is the strongest part of the package. Parameters are grouped into logical sets such as air fuel ratio, so oxygen sensor voltages and fuel trims appear together instead of being buried in a long list. Up to eight PIDs can be selected and plotted either as separate traces or combined onto a single graph with X and Y zoom, which is more capability than many tools at this price allow. Transmission data proves the practical value: fluid temperature and level readings are exactly what is needed to do a correct gearbox oil top up, and in the test the transmission was at 62C, too hot to fill.

The headline compromise is the lack of bidirectional control. There is no cylinder deactivation for locating misfires and no actuator or solenoid activation, so component testing still needs a higher tier tool. The 31 special functions cover the common service jobs including service light resets, ABS bleeding, DPF regeneration, injector coding and, on this car, an electronic coolant pump bleed routine that reports pump status while the manual steps are followed.
